THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS: The cuban missile crisis, which occured in October 1962 during the cold war was between the United States and the Soviet Union. The soviets were secetly building bases in cuba for nuclear missiles that were aimed at the U.S. This frieghtened the U.S. because Cuba was 90 miles away from Florida which wouldnt give the U.S. time to respond if a missile was fired. To stop the soviets from bringing supplies to Cuba the U.S. set up a naval blockade rather than attacking Cuba and start a war with the Soviet Union. The crisis ends on October 28, 1962, and the U.S. and Soviet Union reached an agreement. In the agreement the Soviets would remove the weapons from Cuba, and the U.S. agreed to never invade Cuba.  Bay of Pigs: The Bay of pigs was an attempt to end communism in Cuba by the United States. The CIA trained Cuban exiles to invade Cuba with the support of the U.S. government to overthrow Fidel Castro. The invasion occured in April 1961, and the Cubam forces won in three days. This was a failed attempt by the U.S. to overthrow a communist leader.  THE SPACE RACE: This was a time during the Cold War that the United States and Soviet Union were trying to out-do eachother and to be the first one in space and to the moon. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first satellite in space. Kennedy had planned to have a man walk on the moon by the 1970's. although Kennedy didnt live to see his dream come true, the U.S. comenced the Apollo 11 mission and landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong And Buzz Aldrin were the first two humans to set foot on the moon, surpassing the Soviets to get the first man on the moon.  Kennedy's Assassination: On November 22, 1963 at 12:30 pm in Dallas, Texas president John F. Kennedy, on his way to a luncheon in a presidential motorcade with the top down, was shot in the upper back and then in the head. He was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead at 1 pm. the doctor said he was already dead upon arrival and there was nothing they could do to save him. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with assassinating president Kennedy. Oswald denied killing him and was killed two days later by Jack Ruby. President Johnson created the Warren commission to investigate the assassination. the conclusion was that Oswald was the killer.  |
