MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT: This was an event that started in 1955 when Rosa Parks, a black woman, refused to give up her seat to a white man because she was tired. She was arrested. Blacks began to boycott using the buses. This led to a huge loss of money to the bus system and eventually causes the court to rule that segregation of buses was unconstitutional. ____________________________________________ GREENSBORO SIT-INS: In 1960 blacks would go in to restraunts and other public bulidings and protest against segregation in the form of sitting there and not leaving. Sometimes this would get violent if whites dragged them out and beat them. The blacks would not fight back to show what they were fighting for.

LAWS AGAINST SEGREGATION: Many laws were passed during the sixties to help blacks and other minorities gain there rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin. The Voting Richts Act of 1965 protected voting rights. The Immigration and Nationality Service Act of 1965 opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than Europeans. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 banned discrimination in the sale or rental of a house.

MARCH ON WASHINGTON: In 1963 between 200,000 and 300,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. to here Martin Luther King give his "I Have A Dream" speech. It was a rally for African American Civil rights. It was designed to show the social and political challenges that blacks were still facing in everyday life. |
